Summer Jazz

When I first started this blog, I promised there would be music. And since then, I've done it... but rarely.

This winter I met an enchanting person who said "Metal is just classical music with distortion and jazz is just blues-done by geniuses!"

Summer has come, and that statement has stuck with me. So today I'm offering three jazz pieces that I've caught myself humming time and again.

My Foolish Heart by Shina Ringo and Soil and P. Sessions completely different from Beware My Foolish Heart by Victor Young. It features those key-defying melodic lines that you usually find in brass, rather than vocals. The daring Ringo makes it sound both familiar and like completely new territory. The music video is also fresh and oh-so-posh!



Summer Goddess is an exuberant romp of a piece, by the same band. One has to embrace the loud, atonal passages to fully enjoy this one, but once I did, I caught myself dancing around my apartment! I was reminded of some of the music I used to come across when I lived in the northern part of the east coast as a kid.



Juan Tizol's Caravan has been featured in films from Whiplash to Chocolat after it's first performance by Duke Elington, but my favorite is a version featured in Ocean's 13 (it also shows up in Ocean's 11, but with a completely different feel.) I like the suspicious-sounding bass-line as well as the sense of tremulous echo placed on the melody. :) Enjoy!

Happy New Year! Goodbye Gravity!

Hi everyone and happy new year! Happy Thursday!

I wasn't sure if I should post anything for the time being, since I've gotten busy with life, and have slowed down my posts in general. I might be changing directions here soon. But I thought I'd pop online to share a thought with you.

It seems that lots of my friends, including myself, sense a great deal of positivity and posibility for this new year of 2015. Do you feel that way, too? 

If you haven't sensed it, I invite you to look for it, join it and be a part of spreading it. 

My sister and I used to laugh at this song because it was just so artsy that it was almost a little hard to relate to. But for some reason, hearing it again today, I feel like it's a defining feature of this year.

Well-Primed

Hi everyone! Happy almost Thursday! Depending on what time zone you are in, happy first few hours of Thursday... or happy Friday! :p

This week I indeed tried Something New. I was thinking about how obsessed I've been lately with my favorite color, and dressed to reflect that. My wonderful sister/photographer let the creative juices abound when she took the photographs with a lot of empty space framing me. Later as we talked about it, she mentioned that we could put song lyrics or text in the spaces.  Here are the photos with some of the lyrics of Janelle Monae's Primetime, a song that gets stuck in our heads often.
